Pass Plus Scheme

Our Pass Plus course is an advanced driver training course that takes a minimum of 6 hours to complete. The pass plus scheme provides a great way to advance your driving ability beyond your practical driving test, so that you feel prepared to traverse roads all over the country and abroad.

The Pass Plus Scheme includes 6 one-hour modules to address the areas of driving you may not have covered in much depth prior to passing your test.

What the Pass Plus Scheme Covers

Motorways

Motorway Driving Lessons are now permitted for learner drivers following a law change in 2018. Despite this, learner drivers will still only have limited motorway driving time before passing their test.

Weather Conditions

Driving in adverse weather conditions such as heavy rain and ice can make driving much more complicated than dry conditions. During a pass plus course, you will learn more about how to control your vehicle and the stopping distances of varying weather conditions you learnt during your theory test practice.

Night Driving

Depending on the time of year you had driving lessons, driving at night may be a new experience. Night driving through pass plus teaches newly passed drivers how and when to use the correct type of lights, parking and other elements of driving in the dark.

Other categories include rural driving, town driving and dual carriageways. While you should have some experience with most of these categories from driving lessons, completing a pass plus course will give you a comprehensive understanding of all areas.

Pass Plus Scheme FAQs

What is a Pass Plus scheme?

Pass Plus is a voluntary, post-licence training course for drivers who have already passed their standard driving test. It’s designed to help newly qualified drivers gain more practical experience across a variety of driving conditions, including town driving, rural roads, night driving, motorway and dual carriageway driving, all-weather conditions and more. The aim is to build confidence, improve safety, and expose new drivers to situations they may not have experienced during their standard lessons.

How much does Pass Plus cost?

Pass Plus with Bill Plant Driving School starts from £34 per hour, and the course consists of six one-hour modules, totalling a minimum of 6 hours of training.

However, because all Bill Plant Driving School instructors are self-employed and manage their own pricing and diary, exact Pass Plus costs can vary by instructor and location.

For the most accurate price, we recommend checking availability in your area or calling our team to confirm the Pass Plus rate with your chosen instructor.

Does the Pass Plus scheme reduce insurance?

Yes – completing Pass Plus may reduce your car insurance premiums, but there’s no guarantee. It depends on your insurance provider. Some insurers recognise a Pass Plus certificate as evidence of better training and lower risk, which can lead to discounts or lower premiums for first-year drivers. However, many insurers don’t offer a discount at all, or offer only small reductions, so you should always check with your policy provider before booking in Pass Plus purely for the insurance benefit.

How long does a Pass Plus last?

Once you’ve passed, the certificate you receive doesn’t “expire” in principle; however, its value for insurance discount purposes depends on the insurance company. Some insurers may only recognise Pass Plus certification for a certain period (e.g. for the first year you insure the car), so the discount benefit may not last long-term.

More broadly, the skills you gain from Pass Plus (confidence, experience, safer driving habits) remain with you for life, but as with any driving skill, regular practice is the real key to staying safe and competent.

Is Pass Plus the same as advanced driving?

No — Pass Plus is not the same as advanced driving courses. Pass Plus is intended for newly qualified drivers to help them gain experience in common but challenging driving situations (night, motorway, dual carriageway, rural roads, etc.) that may not have been covered during standard lessons.

Advanced driving courses (for example, those run by organisations such as the IAM RoadSmart) aim at significantly higher standards of skill, anticipation, vehicle control and defensive driving techniques.

So while Pass Plus can improve a new driver’s confidence and competence, it doesn’t provide the same level of advanced training or defensive driving mastery that dedicated advanced driving courses offer.

What happens if you fail Pass Plus?

There’s no formal “exam” at the end of Pass Plus; instead, you’re assessed throughout the course by your instructor, across its six modules (town driving; all-weather; rural roads; night; dual carriageways; motorway).

If your instructor determines you haven’t yet reached the required standard in one or more modules, you won’t receive the Pass Plus certificate. In many cases, that simply means you may need additional training hours before being reassessed, i.e. book more lessons until you meet the standard.

Because Pass Plus is voluntary and meant to build experience (not pass/fail under test-pressure), you’re not penalised, you just need to reach the standard before a certificate is issued.
